Hibiscus flower painted wet-on-wet on a black canvas background

hibscus flower

The canvas of this picture was first given a coat of Black Gesso which was allowed to dry. A very thin coat of Zest-it Clear Painting Medium was then applied to the background area. Dark Greens and Reds where then brushed in while it was still wet.

The leaves were painted first, wet on wet, using mixtures of Cadmium Yellow + Ultramarine Blue + Ivory Black.

The centre of the flowers is Cadmium Yellow with a touch of red added, this was painted in quite dry. The red was thinned with the painting medium to cover each flower and then highlighted.
This is a nice technique for painting large flowers wet-on-wet.
